With classic movie posters adorning the walls and Bob Marley tunes playing on repeat, New York’s Silver Lining Opticians is a homey, hip alternative to megabrand eyewear chains. And by offering an entire reference library of vintage frames — ranging from Seventies Dior to old-school Ray-Ban from its Bausch + Lomb days — shop owners Jordan Silver and Erik Sacher have become a resource for stylists, celebrities and even fashion designers seeking inspiration for their own sun collections.
Now, in partnership with Opening Ceremony, the duo is launching limited edition sunglasses — 1986 Rodenstocks (the German camera lens maker) with mirrored lenses — which hit OC’s New
York and Los Angeles stores this month. The frames retail for $295. “Everything has become so big business oriented, we want to bring eyewear retail back to the shop format,” says Silver. “With our collections, we are able to cater to a certain consumer’s needs while also supporting independent brands that make eyewear exclusively.”
SLO also sells its own styles and contemporary lines by Claire Goldsmith and Dita. The partners supply vintage frames to stores (like Bergdorf Goodman), runway shows (Band of Outsiders) and help celebrities like Rihanna, Kayne West and Jay-Z accessorize for music videos and awards show appearances.
West was wearing a pair of SLO’s Eighties Alitalia frames when he interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. Rihanna, meanwhile, purchased a pair of vintage Christian Roth shades at the store and later wore them seated in the front row at Chanel’s spring show in October.
