This year Converse marks its 100th anniversary. The Converse Rubber Shoe Co. was founded in 1908 by Marquis Mills Converse in Malden, Mass. Appealing to everyone from athletes to WWII soliders to punk rockers, the house responsible for America’s most iconic sneakers has stood the test of time—as have some of its original styles: The Chuck Taylor All Star and the Jack Purcell. To celebrate classic footwear that bridges function and fashion, the company has developed the 1Hund(Red) Artists campaign, enlisting 100 creative types, including Kenji Nakayama, Lena Corwin, Holly Curtis and Camilla Engman, to use sneakers as their blank canvases. Their original artwork has been put into production and sales will benefit (Project) Red for AIDS relief in Africa. They are available at select retailers and converse.com.
