British shoe designer Thomas Murphy is giving a new shine to an age-old metal: copper. Murphy, who launched his first collection last fall, uses the metal for the heels of his handmade shoes. Copper’s natural oxidation process weathers the shoes and gives them a chameleonlike quality, explains the designer.


“They change from virgin pink to oranges, reds, purples, blues and greens,” says Murphy, who has worked with designers Ann-Sofie Back and Robert Cary-Williams before going solo.
