Footwear specialist Modern Vintage is filling out its cadre of entry-level premium product for luxury customers by unveiling handbags for fall.
Rick Cytrynbaum, chief executive officer of Montreal-based Modern Vintage, said the bags range from $195 to $495 at retail and serve the same customer as the firm’s shoe business.
For its debut handbag collection, Modern Vintage teamed up with London handbag brand Jas M.B. Out of about a dozen styles in the collection, Cytrynbaum singled out the Folder Away, a carryall with a worn vintage feel, and the Everyday, which he described as a combo briefcase and cross-body bag, as probable bestsellers.
“He understands what our aesthetic is, and we understand what his craft is,” Cytrynbaum said of the collaboration between Modern Vintage and Jas M.B. “We worked really well together.”
The resulting bags, he continued, are for “that trendy downtown girl that wants a bag, but doesn’t want what everybody else has with names and logos all over it.”
The initial distribution is going to be tightly controlled, and the bags are expected to launch in 80 doors worldwide, including Scoop and Madison, as well as Shopbop.com and Saks Fifth Avenue’s Web site, according to Cytrynbaum. He estimated first-year sales at $3 million to $5 million, with about 75 percent of sales coming from outside the U.S.
