“Handbag designer” just might be the only job Liz Carey writes in ink on her résumé. The 32-year-old Ohio native modeled in the Nineties before starting a life of leisure as the wife of Oasis drummer Alan White. (“I found myself shopping to buy clothes to go shopping in,” she jokes.) After splitting with White, Carey put down roots in Los Angeles, studied jewelry making, pursued a comedy career and settled down with actor Jake Weber. Along the way, she crafted a bag that suited her busy schedule—roomy enough for shoes and makeup, but small enough to carry at cocktail parties. Known as the One Night Stand, it gained a following among Carey’s Hollywood friends, including Cameron Diaz, Lake Bell and Patricia Arquette, and became the basis for Bird Handbags ($650 to $2,530 at Bergdorf Goodman, New York, 800.558.1855).

Part of Bird’s design philosophy is that luxury skins such as ostrich and snake don’t have to be stuffy. “I like the idea that you can throw your exotics on in the daytime with jeans,” says Carey.
