“The pieces had a very industrial feel to them,” says Doo-Ri Chung, referring to her Goth-tinged handbag collaboration with New York-based accessories designers Steve Dumain and Be Inthavong, otherwise known as Be & D. Indeed, these are not slip-on-with-your-sundress pieces: a black knit tote — knitting courtesy of Chung — is wrapped around leather, while ebony goat hair hangs from a shoulder bag, Morticia Addams-like.

“Doo-Ri’s aesthetic for her fall line was of the utmost importance to us to capture during the collaboration,” says Dumain, referring to the designer’s edgy lineup of urban warrior clothes in all variations of, yes, black. “We understand that accessories are the finishing note to complement apparel, so we really wanted to work closely with her to translate the vision.”

While the threesome had originally met in order to discuss a potential shoe collaboration, all agree the bags — which will be sold exclusively at Saks for between $1,100 and $1,980 — will be a continuing project. Regarding spring 2010, Chung says, “We already have a few things in the works.”
