Valentina de Laurentiis—niece of legendary film producer Dino de Laurentiis—may not be the best spokesperson for her accessories line, VdL. “I never carried a handbag before I turned 18—I pocketed everything before that,” says the designer, now 27. Despite her early indifference, de Laurentiis has quickly gained a professional reputation and will unveil her second season, spring 2008, outside of her home base of Italy, where her line is already available at 80 points of sale.
VdL comprises 18 modern and tough-looking pieces, from handbags to wallets, made from napa leather, nubuck, velvet and pearly skins, in the intense colors of blue, red, silver, white and black and embellished with clashing elements from metal buds to fringed applications. Each item is labeled after a glamorous movie star from the Forties or Fifties: Ava (Gardner), Bette (Davis), Marilyn (Monroe) and Edy (without the H, Lamarr).
"I think that all anyone really wants in life is to have people understand us for who we actually are, despite everything," says Ruth Negga. The actress talks "Preachers" season 2 and more on WWD.com. #wwdeye (📷: Dan Doperalski)
"That's something that resonates with me too because I'm so locked into a number. If I go over that number it completely ruins my day so it's nice to get detached from the number on the scale." - Chelsea Handler on Kelly LeVeque's book "Body Love." #wwdeye (📷: John Salangsang)
