When Gucci Group launched the Stella McCartney fashion house in 2001 in a 50-50 joint venture with the designer, the luxury conglomerate was in the midst of an acquisition spree. Just before it closed the McCartney deal, Gucci Group, now known as PPR’s luxury division, had picked up Bottega Veneta and was hot on the trail of Balenciaga.
