PARIS — Artist Richard Prince has yet another Louis Vuitton bag up his sleeve: a limited edition style to coincide with his first major U.K. solo exhibition this summer at the Serpentine Gallery in London.
The 50 ostrich and canvas Jamais bags — numbered and signed by the artist and featuring a smudged and freckled take on the house monogram — will be sold exclusively at Vuitton’s Sloane Street store in London during Prince’s solo “Continuation” show at the Serpentine June 26 to Sept. 7.
Vuitton also plans to host a dinner in Prince’s honor June 24 in a tent inspired by the one used to unveil Vuitton’s spring 2008 collection in October in Paris, where the artist’s collaboration with Vuitton’s artistic director, Marc Jacobs, was unveiled.
Jacobs and Yves Carcelle, Vuitton’s chairman and chief executive, will host the dinner for 120 guests, which will be preceded by an “art talk” between Prince and Tim Marlow of White Cube gallery.
Meanwhile, a portion of proceeds from the Jamais bags, which will retail for 9,000 pounds, or about $17,800 at current exchange, will go to the Serpentine.
