NEW YORK — Accessories industry figures, including Macy’s Inc. chairman, president and chief executive officer Terry Lundgren and designer Frank Zambrelli, gathered Tuesday night to congratulate Echo Design Group chairman Dorothy Roberts on her induction into the Accessories Council’s Hall of Fame.
In 1932, Roberts’ parents, Theresa and Edgar C. Hyman, founded the New York-based scarf and accessories company, and Roberts, 80, has kept it a family business. Her children, Lynn and Steven Roberts, worked for the company, as well as her daughter-in-law, Meg.
“I and everyone at Echo have built a lot of wonderful relationships and partnerships over the years,” said Roberts, who had pictures of her and her family throughout Charlie Palmer’s Métrazur restaurant. “I was very touched by the honor and that so many people took the time to share this evening with me.”
Mayor Michael Bloomberg wrote a letter to Roberts, which was read aloud at the event, thanking her for her contributions to the fashion industry and to New York City.
Roberts is still enthused about designing, making and selling accessories.
“In this business, you need to know what’s going on in the world — the economy, history, movies, the arts, music and so much more,” she said. “All of this, at least for me, makes life so much more stimulating and fulfilling. Also, I love the people I work with at Echo and our many partners.”
Since its inception in 2007, others inducted into the Hall of Fame are Elaine Gold, president of Elaine Gold Enterprises;Mary Belle, president of licensing for Jones Apparel Group Inc., and Marge Axelrad, vice president and editorial director of Vision Monday and 20/20 magazines.
