• The value of diamond trading in the Shanghai Diamond Exchange increased 2.4 percent (year-on-year) to $1.98 billion, in the six months ended June 30. The volume of the same dropped, however, by 37.6 percent to 33.93 million carats. Source: diamondworld.net
• The total value of Swiss watch exports to China was 111.5 million francs ($119.3 million) in August, a drop of 4.7 percent from the same month in 2012. Source: Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry
• Diamonds keep setting records. On Oct. 7, the largest diamond ever sold at auction — at 118.28 carats — was sold for $30.06 million at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong. At auction, it was the highest price paid for a white diamond and the largest diamond ever sold. It broke the record set in May, when a 101.73-carat, D-color, flawless colorless diamond was sold at Christie’s in Geneva for $26.7 million. Performance Issues: In the 12-month period ended August 2013: • Jewelry sales fell 6.2 percent to $21.39 billion from $22.79 billion, a year earlier. • Bags and luggage sales fell 0.4percent to $13.78 billion from $13.84 billion. • Sales of small leather goods jumped 14.1 percent to $3.33 billion from $2.92 billion. • Sunglasses sales slid 6.7 percent to $3.36 billion versus $3.6 billion a year ago.
