Designers have dipped into the centuries-old art of passementerie for flourish this season, turning out shoes, belts and necklaces trimmed with elaborate braiding (passements, in French). There are Christian Louboutin’s mustard yellow stilettos, made rather Goth with black trim along the sides (below), and Anna Sui’s tough boots, softened with multicolored edging. Costume jeweler Dori Csengeri has crafted intricate necklaces of lacelike cotton cord, some inset with cabochons and crystal beads (right), and French label Le Prince Du Sud offers everything from belts to bright-hued clutches embellished with coiled plaits. The effect, as Louboutin notes, is supple and lavish. “I have always loved passementerie,” he says. “It really gives one the feeling of luxurious rest, like passing out into a big ornate cushion.”
