New York designer Waris Ahluwalia, known for creating hip contemporary jewelry by using old-world techniques, unveiled his latest collection on Tuesday at Colette, the boutique that will now be carrying his wares. Dubbed Omnia Vincit Amor, the edgy gold- and silver-based line was inspired by a blackbird motif on the vintage wallpaper in “room 503 of the Hotel Duminy,” where Ahluwalia once stayed in Paris. The designer worked with artisans in India and Italy to craft these special pieces. “For me it’s about experimenting with this knowledge base of hundreds of years,” he said. The collection grew to include six bird varieties fashioned into necklaces and earrings. A majestic enamel-coated eagle swoops down from a fine silver chain, beautifully detailed from the intricate outlines of its feathers to its realistic coloring, as if lifted from an old nature-book illustration. Meanwhile, two mischievous black crows perched atop a pair of gold hoop earrings exhibited a simpler, more cartoonish allure.
