All the buzz around eco-friendly fashion isn’t news to Melissa Joy Manning. The New York-based jeweler is a certified “B” corporation by B Lab, (a nonprofit organization that encourages businesses to solve social and environmental problems) and uses recycled gold and natural materials in her jewelry.
“It’s not a competitive advantage,” says Manning. “It’s about how we can all have a positive effect on the environment…and to have that be fashionable is remarkable.”
In the name of diversification, fashion and the eco-system, Manning — who recently opened a headquarters in SoHo decorated with recycled wood and steel shelves and gilded ceilings she created herself — has expanded her business into a sales showroom where she represents environmentally conscious jewelers, including Luana Coonen and Lauren Wolf.
Manning’s own collections, which incorporate druze, pyrite, rubies, silver and gold, are also on display.
Eventually Manning wants to open the showroom to categories other than jewelry. “We want to be a lifestyle showroom and have designers with a like vision,” says Manning.
