Marisa Howard worked as a magazine editor and commercial lighting designer in Portland, Ore., before starting her jewelry line three years ago.

Seaworthy is new to Capsule Las Vegas this season. It currently sells in 70 boutiques worldwide, as well as at Anthropologie, Free People and Wild Thing. Wholesale prices range from $20 to $80.

WWD: Why did you change careers?

Marisa Howard: I was getting burnt out from all the travel. As a lighting designer I had clients like Costco, Nordstrom and casinos in Las Vegas, and I was looking for a more creative way to connect with people.

WWD: What inspires the line?

M.H.: Thirties and Forties Art Deco shapes coupled with a modern Egyptian goddess feel. I also love the textile designs by Sonia Delaunay.

WWD: What materials do you work with?

M.H.: I use mostly bronze, and pieces are also available in sterling silver. At first, I was water-jet cutting a lot of sheet metal, but this season I wanted a chunkier look, so I started casting the metal. There are a few stones like lapis lazuli, kyanite and malachite. It’s all made locally in Portland.

WWD: Where did the company name come from?

M.H.: My name comes from the Latin root for “of the sea.” My brother’s name is Dylan, which comes from the Latin root for “son of the sea.” My parents were old surfer hippies from California. I like that the name Seaworthy means ready to go and fit for travel.
