NEW YORK — One of the oldest American costume jewelry houses is experiencing a renaissance.
Miriam Haskell, the 83-year-old brand that was relaunched in 2007, is opening a temporary in-store boutique within Henri Bendel here today and is bracing for international growth.
Miriam Haskell will also be featured in Bendel’s Fifth Avenue windows until June 16. Haskell will feature vintage styles dating back to when Miriam Haskell herself designed them. Today, the line is under the parent corporation Haskell Jewels, which produces costume jewelry for brands such as Betsey Johnson, Kenneth Cole and Simply Vera by Vera Wang for Kohl’s. Known for its handmade beaded and filigree jewelry, Bendel’s will host a Haskell artisan who will make jewelry on site for the week.
“Both Bendel’s and Miriam Haskell have a deep fashion history and were pioneers in the American fashion industry,” said Miriam Haskell chief operating officer Gabrielle Fialkoff. “Bendel’s has always catered to a chic and modern woman and throughout its long history was a fashion destination and the same can be said of Miriam Haskell. Her customer was a modern, trend-setting woman ahead of her time who established costume jewelry as a way to express her individuality.”
Haskell died in 1977.
Henri Bendel president and chief executive officer Ed Bucciarelli agreed, noting the costume jewelry sector is booming.
“We were one of the first stores to carry Miriam Haskell back in the day,” Bucciarelli said. “The heritage of that brand is terrific and all the handwork is quite beautiful.”
Prices for pieces in the temporary shop range from $250 to $1,200.
This year, Miriam Haskell has also significantly expanded outside the U.S., with new accounts such as Le Bon Marché in Paris, Paul Smith in London and Isetan in Tokyo.
“With so much costume [jewelry] on the runways and the economic environment being as tough as it is, it was just a matter of time before luxury costume jewelry became important to the best shops around the world,” said Fialkoff. “The brand offers a type of workmanship simply not done anymore and bold statement pieces for today’s woman to stand out from the pack.”
