A stop by two accessories presentations, Tom Binns and Jennifer Alfano, offered a respite from the runway. Binns showed the first installment of his collection, with more to be revealed in Paris beginning Feb. 26. One group paid homage to Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" by expertly wrapping gold and silver leaves around the wrist, creating chic cuffs and bangles, or shaping them in a circle for a new take on the hoop earring. Three other groups reflected Binns' view of the dark mood of the industry, and the world, for that matter. The names said it all. Pearls in Peril, for example, was a saucy mix of pearls, crystals and chains. Dumont Noire was a jet version of his Dumont collection, and Calamity Chain featured a mix of chains and colored crystals.
Alfano's handbags, on the other hand, revealed a brighter outlook, using her love of saturated colors for a fresh collection with vibrant hues of teal and purple accompanying rich cognac and gray. Alfano dabbled in ostrich for the first time, which may increase prices, adding the skin to her recurring structured shoulder bags. With three new daytime offerings, including a chic bucket hobo and a ruched day clutch, Alfano should keep her followers happy.
