CANNES, France — A real-life “bling ring” hit the Cannes Film Festival in the wee hours Friday morning, stealing a reported $1 million worth of jewels from Chopard, one of the festival’s official sponsors, a police source said.
A spokeswoman for Chopard said that “an employee had been the victim of a robbery last night in their hotel room while not on the premises. There is currently a police investigation under way, so we can only let you know that the value of the pieces stolen is far lower than those in the figures circulating in the media.
“The jewels stolen are not part of the collection of jewels that are worn by actresses during the Cannes Film Festival.”
In addition to providing jewels for the red carpet, Chopard makes the coveted Palme d’Or, awarded to the best film at the end of the fortnight-long film festival.
