Hermès to Open Two Leather Goods Factories

The luxury goods maker said it would open the facilities in eastern France within the next few years.

PARIS — Hermès International said on Tuesday it will open two leather goods factories in eastern France as part of its continued drive to expand capacity in order to meet thriving demand for its bags.

The maker of Birkin bags and silk squares plans to eventually employ 600 people in the region, including the 210 artisans at its existing factory in Seloncourt.

A facility in Héricourt will open in 2015 or 2016, to be followed by another near Montbéliard at an unspecified date. Both will take advantage of the know-how of the neighboring Seloncourt staffers, in addition to the specialized training dispensed by the Ecole Boudard located in nearby Bethoncourt, the company said.

Hermès will open a temporary workshop in Etupes in early 2014 to welcome the first trainees in the saddlery and leather goods division.
