PARIS — Christian Dior is bulking up its timepiece offer for 2009.

A one million euro ($1.3 million at current exchange) ruby and diamond-encrusted Dior Christal Tourbillon watch, designed by John Galliano, will figure among the house’s lineup for the Baselworld Watch and Jewelry Show this March, as will two stainless steel and rubber diving watches from its “Chiffre Rouge” men’s line.
These were among a number of pieces showcased during a preview at Dior headquarters here Monday.
While declining to disclose numbers, Laurence Nicolas, president of Dior watches and general manager of Dior jewelry, said business “skyrocketed” in 2008, citing France, the U.S., the U.K. and China and Hong Kong among leading markets.
“The million euro watch will sell,” she asserted, adding that luxury watch sales represent “an increasing share” of Dior’s overall business.
Moving against the house’s new direction for chunky masculine styles, Victoire de Castellane has hatched three itsy-bitsy watch styles for the “La D” line, meanwhile, available in white, yellow and pink gold with feminine satin straps.
Other designs presented include an automatic Christal timepiece featuring a circle of white diamonds on its dial and bezel, as well as a limited edition “mysterious” Dior Christal Tourbillon featuring nine rotating discs of sapphire crystal in various finishes, including mother of pearl, lacquer and metal. The discs are designed to create a flickering movement on the watch’s bezel.
