Cosmetic Executive Women celebrated 20 years of its annual CEW Beauty Insiders’ Choice Awards with brand winners big and small. The fact that L’Oréal Paris won 11 awards was not a surprise to Carlotta Jacobson, president of CEW, although she noted it was a mixed bag because the indies were not forgotten. Newcomer Glamglow took home the awards for Indie Brand and Eye Treatment Prestige.

“People [say] there’s no innovation, there’s nothing new happening,” said Jacobson. “But there is. There’s always something. It’s just that you can’t come out with something that’s so revolutionary that you’ve never heard of such a thing. It’s the mixture that makes innovation. It’s not just a product someone discovered.”

Acting as the presenting sponsor, Meredith Corp. partnered with CEW to reach consumers through Meredith’s multiple media platforms, which include magazines, television and digital initiatives. In addition to driving the awareness for the awards, the partnership will align with Meredith’s Beauty Center of Excellence, a consumer-insight-driven beauty-leadership group that helps advertisers get in touch with women across all Meredith digital platforms.

The awards, which were trending nationally on Twitter, were created two decades ago when Jacobson thought the industry wasn’t getting the best press.

“Everything [back then] on TV was about the product and how cosmetics weren’t safe,” said Jacobson. “I thought we should be doing something that’s positive for the industry and we can bring it to the consumer.”
The winners are determined exclusively by CEW’s membership of 6,000 beauty industry professionals; 193 finalists were selected from more than 750 entries.

To that end, this year marked one of several firsts for the awards. CEW presented two new categories, the Iconic Beauty Award and the Most Buzzed About Award. The Iconic Beauty Award recognized two products (one in mass and one in prestige) that have transcended 20 or more years in the industry. The winning product in mass was Maybelline New York Great Lash Mascara, while the prestige winner was YSL Beauté Touche Éclat. Sponsored by Yahoo, the Most Buzzed About Award acknowledged products consumers were talking about online in mass and prestige. The winning product in mass was L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Butterfly Mascara, while the prestige front-runner was Estée Lauder Modern Muse Eau de Parfum.

This year, instead of its usual host, actor and comedian Mario Cantone, actress Aisha Tyler charmed the audience with her quick wit and comedic performance. “I wake up looking like a man and then I use all your products and paint this personality on every single day,” Tyler told the crowd. “I may look like a fierce drag queen, but I am not. I have the height to be on “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” but not the equipment.”
