LONDON — Alliance Boots, owner of the Boots pharmacy and beauty chain, plans to cut 900 jobs over the next three years as it prepares to restructure and streamline its operations.

The company stated Monday that the jobs to be eliminated are in the firm’s health and beauty division, and are not store-based. Most of the positions are at its headquarters at Nottingham, England.

Alliance Boots said it hopes to reduce annual operating costs by 56 million pounds, or $88.5 million at current exchange, by 2013-2014. The company is preparing to streamline its manufacturing and supply chain activities.

Alex Gourlay, chief executive of the health and beauty division, said Alliance Boots has been working since 2007 to become a more “robust” operation. “This latest phase will enable us to have a stronger and more agile support infrastructure fit for the long-term future,” he said.

The firm said that some staff would be moved to other areas within the group.
