Backstage at Naeem Khan on Tuesday, the beauty look gently nodded to Frida Kahlo.
James Boehmer for Nars Cosmetics said that while Khan’s collection references the Mexican painter, “We didn’t want it to look literally like Frida Kahlo….Anything on the brows would be too costumey. We wanted to have the makeup more undone.”
To begin, he prepped the face with Nars Skin moisturizer and then applied liquid foundation and powder where needed, including along the T-zone. He used Nars the Multiple in South Beach and pressed shadow in Lola Lola, a shimmering apricot shade, to create a halo of color around the eyes. On the lips, he used two Nars Satin Lip Pencils in Hyde Park and Yu for a stain effect.
Hairstylist Sally Hershberger, using products from her namesake line, interpreted Kahlo’s look with a long braid wrapped around the models’ heads. “I wanted to make sure it didn’t look too bohemian,” Hershberger said. She used extensions in the hair for length, then created two low ponytails, which were braided and wrapped around up toward the crown, meeting at the top. She kept the texture of the braids dry, but added shine to the front with Hyper Hydration Keratin Spray.
Nails were painted in Essie’s A List, a red with a blue undertone, which suited the many reds in Khan’s collection. The light shimmering pink shade Sugar Daddy decorated toes.
