After seasons of bright—almost fluorescent— shades, lip colors are turning deep once more for fall. Makeup artists favored hues like berry, plum and mahogany, as at 3.1 Phillip Lim, where Francelle Daly for Nars achieved her desired shade by blending brown eyeliner with Nars Lip Pencil in Kenya. “This is what gives it that edge,” explained Daly. “The lips aren’t Gothic. They’re just a really beautiful red- brown lip.” Meanwhile at Vera Wang, Clé de Peau Beauté’s Lucia Pieroni looked to the recent past for the inspiration for her wine-stained mouth. “It’s a gorgeous, simple, Nineties face,” she said. “And the polished element is the strong mouth.”
