MAC Store Opens in India
NEW YORK — Is India the new China? MAC Cosmetics hopes to find out.

The edgy makeup brand is breaking new ground for the Estee Lauder Cos., becoming the first of the company's brands to open a freestanding store in India. The store opened Thursday, June 30, in a mall in Mumbai, India's second-largest city.

"MAC's arrival in India comes at a time when Bollywood and Indian culture is at its influential peak globally," stated John Demsey, president of MAC Cosmetics and of the Estee Lauder brand. "Mumbai has been chosen as MAC's first Indian location due to the presence of India's film and fashion industries that dominate the city."

To further promote the brand in India, MAC has also signed Bollywood makeup artist Mickey Contractor, who in 2004 was named Best Makeup Artist by the International Indian Film Academy for the Bollywood film "Kal Ho Naa Ho."

"MAC is the ideal brand from our company to launch first in India," stated William P. Lauder, president and chief executive officer of the Estee Lauder Cos. "India is a country that is intensely interested in fashion and cinema, and has a rich cultural history that aligns with the MAC positioning. It is also gratifying that we are entering India in a way that aligns with MAC's philanthropic vision by providing significant funding to HIV/AIDS projects."

In October, the cosmetics brand's philanthropic arm, the MAC AIDS Fund, will contribute $250,000 to YRG Gaitonde, a project serving HIV-affected women in Chennai and the surrounding state of Tamil Nadu, to build a hospital for HIV/AIDS patients.

Future plans, Demsey said, include opening a second MAC store in Mumbai by 2006 as well as establishing MAC stores in Delhi and Bangalore by the end of 2007.

Dior Beauty Taps New MD
NEW YORK — Dior Beauty has a new doctor in its house of experts.

The brand said this week that it has hired dermatologist and researcher Neil Sadick, MD, as its international medical adviser.

Sadick, who is in private practice in addition to being both the founder of the Sadick Research Group and a clinical professor at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, is being hired to help develop skin care products — most notably those designed to appeal to American women."We are thrilled to have Dr. Sadick on board to ... help Dior develop highly effective skin care products that provide immediate results while specifically targeting the concerns of the American woman," said Terry Darland, senior vice president of sales and education for Dior Beauty.

Sadick will also make store appearances to promote Dior's skin care lines and help train beauty advisers on client evaluation.

Henkel Names Van Bylen as Director
BERLIN— In a top management change in the German beauty industry last week, Hans Van Bylen was named to succeed Uwe Specht as director of the cosmetic/body care division of the Henkel Group.

Specht, who reached retirement age on June 30, was a Henkel veteran of 36 years. He headed the Dusseldorf-based group's cosmetics business for the last two decades, building it from a small national concern to an international operation.

Van Bylen, 44, has held various international positions with Henkel since 1984. He was most recently responsible for Henkel's worldwide hair care and overseas cosmetics businesses.
