LONDON -- Calvin Klein has confirmed that he plans to launch a new unisex fragrance by November.
The designer's comments, made during an appearance at Selfridges Thursday to launch his Escape for Men, confirm a report in these columns on Jan. 24.
Klein said he prefers to discuss projects only when they are introduced because of the tendency of fragrances to change during development. He also said he doesn't care for the word "unisex" to describe his single fragrance for women and men.
"That's not a word I use. But I am working on those kinds of ideas. It's about sharing a common thing," he said, citing the increasing use of men's fragrances by women.
No decision has been made on the scent's name, Klein said, although he confirmed that the word "one" is in the running, either alone or in combination with something else.
Klein also said he and his licensee, Unilever's Calvin Klein Cosmetics, have discussed the possibility of the new scent carrying a price tag lower than typical prestige brands.
"There was this established idea in the fragrance world that my type of products should be priced at a certain level," Klein said. "But now we are beginning to talk about what we need to do to break ground in price terms."
Klein's appearance at Selfridges was his first in the U.K. in five years. He has never made a store appearance in Continental Europe.
After Escape for Men is launched at Selfridges, it will be introduced at Harrods and then at the 70 largest Klein fragrance accounts in the U.K.
"Selfridges is among the top three stores in the world for my fragrances," Klein said.
He said he plans to significantly increase his presence in the European market over the next few years. Every major European country will have introduced all of his women's and men's fragrances by early 1995.
