PARIS — What would an imaginary flower smell like? And what about planets other than earth?

These were the types of thoughts underlying the creation of Comme des Garcons 3, the latest Comme des Garcons scent.

Also key was a photograph found by the fragrance’s perfumer, Mark Buxton, of Creations Aromatiques. It’s of a sole flower growing in the midst of a lava field.

Comme des Garcons designer Rei Kawakubo “said it’s the epitome of an imaginary flower,” explained Adrian Joffe, managing director the house.

It’s such inspirations that led to the conception of the perfectly clear product — from the plastic outer packaging to the textured-glass bottle, which has a similar amorphous shape to its signature predecessors, but with small, raised bumps.

“We wanted to make it more 3-D,” explained Joffe. “We wanted something textural, because this is a textural product.”

Even the Comme des Garcons juice is see-through. The fragrance includes mandarin, magnolia leaf and basil at the top; angelica root, cardamom, mace and absolute immortelle in the heart, and Lebanese cedar, sandalwood and patchouli in the base.

Comme des Garcons 3 was just launched exclusively in the Comme des Garcons fragrance shop here on March 5. It will be introduced in the U.S. and Japan the first week of April, and on April 8, it will bow in Liberty’s in the U.K.

While Joffe declined to discuss a sales target, industry sources estimate Comme des Garcons 3 will generate about $570,000 in wholesale volume during its first 12 months.

The 75-ml. eau toilette spray will sell for $78 in the U.S.
