PARIS -- Comme des Garcons is planning to launch a women's fragrance, perhaps next year, and designer Rei Kawakubo has apparently decided that the house should manage her first fragrance itself.
The Tokyo-based firm recently set up a new French company called Comme des Garcons Parfums, which will be in charge of the fragrance.
Although a spokeswoman said the company will not unveil details until May, it is understood that Comme des Garcons has decided against licensing the fragrance to a major beauty company. The firms has opted instead to follow the path of other designers, such as Donna Karan and Sonia Rykiel, and control its own fragrance business.
Industry sources have speculated that the venture will parallel the development of Kawakubo's fashion business, relying heavily on editorial coverage with little advertising support.
