“We’re doing a monochromatic, nomadic woman,” said MAC Cosmetics makeup artist James Kaliardos, who added that “Sudanese women” inspired the beauty look at Diane von Furstenberg Sunday afternoon.
“We’re shading the face with natural tones,” he said, “and there’s a round, light, smoky eye.” He applied a taupe hue to top and bottom eyelids to lend rounded definition to the eyes. On the cheeks, he went with a pearl cream highlighter and brushed a “bone beige” eye shadow onto the edges of the lips “to kind of finish off [the face].
“It’s sort of a sandstorm, Lawrence of Arabia look,” he remarked.
“She’s a world traveler,” said Orlando Pita, who styled hat-covered locks at von Furstenberg, “mixing clothes from wherever she goes — and she’s always wearing a hat.”
Pita used one of his own products, called Pump, in the hair to produce volume “if needed” or, if extra volume was not necessary, he went “straight to the curling iron.”
Hair flowed from underneath the hats into big loose waves, Pita noted. “She’s a free spirit girl,” he said.
