Elegant, pared-down beauty—with exquisite skin and intense eyes—dominated the recent fall 2014 couture runways in Paris. “I think couture is all about the dress, and it’s about making girls look beautiful,” said makeup artist Linda Cantello backstage before the Armani Privé show. “At the same time, it’s not about the makeup.” Natural glamour reigned on the Giambattista Valli catwalk, for instance. “The makeup is all about the skin,” said Val Garland, working with MAC Cosmetics. Hairstylist Guido Palau said his inspiration for Valentino’s beauty look was “Ophelia, water, shine, waves, pre-Raphaelite.” To wit, he crafted an undulating movement in the models’ tresses. “The girls were to be serenely beautiful,” continued makeup artist Pat McGrath, who focused on highlighting and contouring. At Elie Saab, Orlando Pita created a side part that looked finger-combed. “It’s very easy; not too strict,” he explained. The devil was in the detail, such as the fine silver band decorating models’ eyelids at Dior, slashed under eyes at Alexandre Vauthier or the dual-toned metallic shadow ornamenting the eyes at Chanel.
