PARIS — The grunge beauty look at Dries Van Noten gleaned inspiration from Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love.
Makeup artist Peter Philips painted models’ lips fuchsia with Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet number 37.
“Because [Van Noten] has this grunge haute couture theme going on and the hair is kind of grunge, with the roots [showing] and the texture, it’s nice to bring that one element which is a classic haute couture — the lip,” explained Philips.
Models’ skin was left pale and given a satin finish, and eyelids got a greenish-gray shade of powder. A touch of beige liner was added.
Alongside the Cobain and Love references, hairstyle Paul Hanlon had in mind Emma Balfour, David Sims and Face magazine in its early years.
Some models roots were painted darker with makeup powder. And to help make tresses matt, dry and stringy, Hanlon spritzed on Frédéric Fekkai Ocean Waves Spray and used Tigi Bed Head After Party smoothing cream and Superstar Queen for a Day thickening spray.
“It’s not a hairdo; it’s just a feeling of texture,” said Hanlon.
