To create the dewy and pale skin at Marni, makeup artist Tom Pecheux employed two lipsticks and one eye cream.
“We wanted to give a borderline effect of a wax mannequin,” he explained. Using MAC Cosmetics, he prepped skin with Studio Moisture Tint. Using the nude lipstick shade Siss, he contoured cheekbones and temples. Myself lipstick was applied to lips and the apples of the cheeks.
A gray-mauve Cream Colour Base in Breaking Ground was blended onto cheekbones, eyelids, eyebrows and the cupid’s bow.
“The color’s a bit twisted — instead of the gold, silver or rosy shades that we usually use to highlight the skin, it’s a bit gray,” he said.
Hairstylist Paul Hanlon crafted a multi-textured style evocative of tree roots, branches or bird nests. “It’s not pretty. There’s a kind of twistiness to it,” he said.
To create an extremely flat and shiny crown, hair was loaded with mousse, twisted around the head and covered with a mesh cap. “The effect is like a woven wicker basket or a bird’s nest, like if you had a towel on your head and kept twisting it around – you can’t tell where the hair stops or starts,” Hanlon remarked.
Free-hanging lengths were doused with Tigi Bed Head Superstar Queen For A Day. Hair from the crown was sprayed with L’Oréal Elnett and sculpted to reference tree branches.
