From the ultimate pinup Bettie Page at Dior to the Phantomof the Opera at Vivienne Westwood, hair and makeup artistslooked far and wide for inspiration this season. At Jean PaulGaultier, the models had a distinct David Bowie circa ZiggyStardust vibe, while at Unique, hairstylist Paul Hanlonchanneled Guy Bourdin’s photos for voluminous, GraceCoddington-esque styles. At Dior, makeup artist PatMcGrath used bright, bold colors on the eyes and lipspaired with a strong brow, while hairstylist Orlando Pitapinned on bangs for a Fifties flair. “She’s a TechnicolorBettie Page,” said McGrath backstage. Still, there wasnothing retro about the final result. “She’s very modern,”continued McGrath. “It’s all about bold colors—almostlike a Pop Art print.”
