In an effort to prove itself as a hair care company that approaches treatment from the inside as well as the outside, L'Oréal-owned Kérastase this month has launched Densitive, daily supplements formulated to help those suffering from thinning hair and hair loss. Densitive is designed to be taken twice a day with meals and is the first product in the luxury hair care brand's dietary supplement range. It is also meant to complement its Age Recharge line of hair care products.
By targeting the hair's bulb, which can become weak due to the environment, illness or hormonal imbalance, Densitive aims to get to the root of hair loss. "We developed our science with a nutritionist," explained Dr. Paul Fehn, vice president of communications and research and development at L'Oréal, who added the pills' active ingredients lie in an amino vegetable complex featuring taurine to stabilize the hair bulb; grape seed and green tea polyphenols for scalp microcirculation, and zinc to help produce keratin, a core component of hair. "The end result, having put it in pill form, is thicker and healthier hair," said Fehn.
Several clinical studies funded by L'Oréal measure Densitive's effectiveness. The first study measured whether Densitive had an effect on hair loss, and was a random, double-blind study where half of participants received Densitive and the other half received a placebo. A hair combing test measured the number of hairs that "occur" in the comb, explained Fehn. Observations were made on the 72 participants after one month, three months and six months. Fehn said ultimately results showed that 78 percent of those taking Densitive showed slowing of hair loss and that 38 percent taking the supplement showed "statistically significant slowing of hair loss."
"This is a powerful representation that we have something that works," he added.
In a different study that measured hair thickness, dermatologists observed that 76 percent of 109 participants taking Densitive showed substantial thickening of hair after six months.
Tommy Buckett, a New York-based hairstylist hired by Kérastase to help educate his peers about Kérastase products, said the new Densitive supplements would target a wide range of people.
"I think with hair loss and hair thinning, many clients have a concern," he said.Buckett said he's been taking the pills [even though he has a thick, healthy mane] and he has noticed his hair has become thicker and more shiny.
