Manhattan’s University Club got a little dose of glamour Tuesday evening when it played host to the Pratt Institute’s annual scholarship dinner for Marc Rosen’s graduate school packaging design program.
The dinner, which was cohosted by Pratt and Luxe Pack, raised $250,000 for the scholarship fund, according to Rosen.
“It’s very emotional to have this evening,” said Rosen of the black-tie affair, which celebrated the 20th anniversary of Rosen’s scholarship fund and paid tribute to past honorees including Estée Lauder Cos. Inc., Procter & Gamble Co. and Coty Beauty. “Knowing that 20 years after the scholarship was established, my friends in the industry are still there supporting it makes it very special.”
WABC-TV’s Eyewitness news anchor Diana Williams served as mistress of ceremonies. The evening included a citation from Mayor Bloomberg’s office recognizing Rosen’s contributions to the cosmetics and packaging design industry, delivered by Kate Levin, commissioner of cultural affairs for the City of New York, and the announcement of the Marc Rosen Distinguished Visiting Professorship in Design Chair by Pratt Institute president Dr. Thomas Schutte. “Marc had a vision,” said Schutte. “And from this vision we have this scholarship and this dinner and now we have created an endowment fund for distinguished visitors to come to Pratt.”
During the program, Clinique’s worldwide president Lynne Greene — who was flanked by Dan Brestle, vice chairman and president of Estée Lauder, North America — read a message from the company’s chairman of the board Leonard Lauder, which praised Rosen and his talent. “Packaging is key to our company. We love alluring and beautiful designs, but we know it goes beyond that,” wrote Lauder. “You combine style with great function and thanks to you, our products are not only instantly recognizable, but are safe and user friendly.” Lauder went on to laud Rosen’s dedication to Pratt, acknowledging that “with the aid of your scholarship fund, the Institute has shown to the world that package design is an important art form, while also introducing to the industry many a talented newcomer.”
Fragrance Foundation president Rochelle Bloom called Rosen “an icon in our industry” and credited the man of the evening with “filling the pipeline with young talent.”
