NEW YORK — Mass retail executives gathered in Manhattan Tuesday for the sixth annual National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation Dinner.

The event, held at the Sheraton New York, raised more than $1.8 million. The proceeds will be allocated among several charities yet to be selected by the NACDS Foundation. Since its inception in 1999, the NACDS Foundation has donated more than $5.7 million to more than 90 public service and philanthropic organizations.

True to form, keynote speaker Newt Gingrich delivered a message centering on moral character. After retiring from Congress in 1999, Gingrich founded the Center for Health Transformation, a Washington-based consortium of health care providers, corporations and government leaders designed to help achieve a better system of health care.
