Sebastian Professional is celebrating the unconventional with its “New to the Eye” fashion photography contest.

Sebastian Professional is known for its edgy, hair-raising image campaigns, and now the Procter & Gamble Co.-owned company is celebrating the unconventional with its “New to the Eye” fashion photography contest, which focuses on hair.

Venezuelan-born, New York-based Miguel Villalobos locked in the top Gold prize with a collection of photos in both color and black-and-white. They range from a pillow portrait of actress Tilda Swinton to images of a model sporting a seaside style, accented with shells and bird wings.

There’s also a bountiful bouffant constructed of real blooms, reminiscent, as jury-member Matthias Harder (curator of the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin) reminded the crowd, of works by 16th century painter Arcimboldo, who assembled faces from grouped objects.

An exhibit, made up of 45 of 1,100 submitted works, runs through Friday at Berlin’s artMbassy gallery, then goes on tour, starting with Vienna and Zurich.
