Sarah Rose Stein, a dental student at Columbia University, visited Nars’ West Village flagship in search of the perfect foundation. Stein needed help finding a replacement for her now-discontinued Clinique base.
“I came to Nars because I know there are talented makeup artists here to guide me,” says the 27-year-old, who has never before used a Nars foundation.
She not only got shade-matched, but also had her makeup done by the artist on duty, Miguel Ramos. To complement her porcelain skin, Ramos picked a strawberry-hued lip gloss and shimmery eye shadow. Stein bought all three products Ramos used. Stein’s ideal shopping environment involves a one-on-one consultation.
“It’s about finding what works and seeing it on my face by someone who knows how to apply it,” she says. “Having someone explain everything to me made it easier to pick products. These are colors I wouldn’t have chosen for myself, but I love how [they] look.”

Twenty-three-year-old marathon organizer Graciela Samuel traveled from the Bronx to the bustling MAC Times Square store to scope out new products and replace a few staples.
“I love Mineralize Skinfinish because it looks so natural,” says Samuel, who also bought her favorite concealer, Select Moisturecover. “These are literally the exact color of my skin, and give me amazing coverage.”
She was on the hunt, too, for mascara and eyeliner.
“I asked a makeup artist for something that would volumize and define,” she says.
Samuel also frequents Sephora and loves Jessica Simpson’s Fancy scent.
“I’m very simple with my beauty routine,” says the Dominican Republic native. “I like to define my eyes, but that’s about it.”
Noting MAC products “last forever,” Samuel likes buying new makeup all in one go, and shops once every couple of months.
“MAC products last me about two months,” says Samuels. “That makes the brand worth the purchase.”
