WINNERS’ CIRCLE: Andrea Jung is going to need to make some space in her trophy cabinet. The Avon Products Inc. chairman and chief executive officer has been named the Cosmetic Executive Women (U.K.) Lifetime Achiever 2010. She will be honored at CEW (U.K.)’s Achiever Awards in October.
TAAZ.COM APPOINTMENT: Maggie Ciafardini, who was formerly the chief executive officer of the beauty division of Yves Saint Laurent USA, has been named general manager of beauty and retail at virtual makeover Web site Taaz.com, a New York-based post. In her new position, Ciafardini is to further expand Taaz’s “reach and impact” in the virtual makeup space, the firm stated. Prior to YSL’s beauty division, Ciafardini held senior executive positions at Beauté Prestige International USA, Bobbi Brown, Estée Lauder International and Benetton Cosmetics Corp.
SAFE LIGHT: CND is fighting recent data that found UV lamps in nail salons put users at an extraordinary risk of cancer of the hands. According to Dr. David Valia, director of research and development for CND, the amount of energy from a UV lamp during a nail service would be roughly equivalent to the amount of UV exposure one would experience during a typical full day of exposure in indoor fluorescent lighting. A press release by CND, a global leader in professional nail, hand and foot beauty, explained that “UV light sources such as the ones used for curing nail products emit UV energy at a very low level. Nail lamps emit a UV light at a very narrow section of the UVA region, while both indoor lighting and sunlight emit UV light across a much broader spectrum including UVA, UVB, and UVC….Considering the minimal exposure of minutes drying nail color under a UV lamp versus the percentage of time spent unprotected in the sun or the office, the anxieties of getting skin damage from a manicure are disproportionate to the truth.”
OPI FOUNDER EXPANDS PORTFOLIO: George W. Schaeffer, founder of OPI, acquired Aloxxi Professional Hair Care from Alberto-Culver Co. on April 1. The all-cash deal allows him to expand his color expertise (OPI is the largest professional nail lacquer company) into the hair color segment. Schaeffer said, “When it comes to the salon business, hair and nails are the two areas where color reigns….After having built OPI Products Inc. into a giant within the professional nail category, entering the professional hair color category is a natural next step and an incredibly exciting opportunity.” Schaeffer will run Aloxxi as a separate, independent company not associated with OPI. Aloxxi Hair Colour products includes permanent, tone-on-tone, nonammonia and no-lift plant dye formulations, as well as a range of premium backbar products. The new Aloxxi offices are located in Southern California, where the brand’s former parent company, Nexxus, operated. Managing director Myriam Clifford will work with Schaeffer on growing the brand. The deal took place 29 years to the day Schaeffer purchased Odontorioum Products Inc., the dental supply house which became OPI.
DEAN’S LIST: Hairstylist Chaz Dean has introduced $32 Replenishing Treatment Mist in three varieties — fig, sweet almond mint and lavender — to his shampoo-less Wen hair and body care product line. “It has 15 different extracts in it, and each one I added for a very specific reason because, when you are spraying down your hair, I wanted to make sure you are keeping the body,” he said. Tea tree and cucumber aloe versions of the mist will be available in September, a month before Dean is planning to launch a new cleansing conditioner he described as helping smooth and polish hair. Guthy-Renker also recently shot updated infomercials for Wen with host Alyssa Milano, who replaces Melissa Gilbert, and actress Holly Robinson Peete that are slated to hit television airwaves later this year, according to Dean.
PUR ARTIST: Jackie Gomez has been named the in-house makeup artist at mineral makeup brand Pür Minerals in her first official capacity with a beauty brand. Gomez, who has worked extensively with Beyoncé Knowles, Kerry Washington and Zoe Saldana, will be creating how-to videos for Pür Minerals, translating the latest beauty trends for everyday wear, and introducing new products to consumers. The 27-year-old gravitated toward the healthful benefits of Pür Minerals, which she said are essential for celebrities who need to preserve their skin, and the versatility of its products. “I don’t have to travel with such a big bag. I have the Pür Minerals’ products that multitask, and I can still achieve a beautiful look,” she said. Pür Minerals is owned by Atlanta-based Astral Brands and is available at Ulta and Dillard’s, where its prices range from $15 to $40.
BODY SHOP MOVES: The Coop Group has inked a master franchising agreement for The Body Shop in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, and it has acquired The Body Shop Switzerland SA. Ivan Levy, The Body Shop Switzerland’s cofounder, will remain at the company as chief executive officer. The business, which counts 37 doors and generates annual sales of more than 30 million Swiss francs, or $26 million at current exchange, will be run autonomously within Coop Group. Coop operates supermarkets, perfumeries and restaurants, among other businesses.
