CHICAGO -- Spring may not be in sight for a few weeks yet, but Michael Anthony's new Aveda Day Spa has one way to dispel the winter blues.
For just $250 -- well, it's cheaper than a trip to the tropics -- you can be exfoliated, massaged and wrapped up like a giant burrito in hot towels saturated with essential oils for the ultimate in sensory overload.
It's called the Ultimate Day of Beauty and also includes a facial, manicure and pedicure, blow-dry and makeup, and a suitably healthful lunch. The spa's consultants use Aveda's plant and flower-derived products, and customize treatments with aromatherapy oils to uplift or relax, according to the customer's needs or mood.
Salon owner Anthony says demand for the all-day package, with sales averaging eight a week, is greater than he anticipated when he opened the spa last fall. "It's mostly men that buy them as gifts for their wives or girlfriends," he said.
The clientele is definitely on the young and hip side, befitting the spa's location in the trendy Sheffield and North Avenue area close to clubs, bars and restaurants and the Whole Foods grocery store.
And, if a full day is out of financial range for an anti-winter antidote, manicures start at $14, massages at $55.
