And the buyers in question, according to a Reuters item early this week, have now narrowed to Givaudan and Firmenich.Neither Haarman & Reimer or Bayer would comment on the rumors, although the spokesman for Bayer did reiterate the company’s oft-stated intention of finalizing the H&R sale by the end of the third quarter of 2002. Givaudan and Firmenich refused to comment on the reports. Reuters quoted industry sources as saying "the talks with Givaudan have reached an advanced stage, but Bayer is also continuing to talk with the Firmenich Consortium." The asking price for H&R has been placed between $1.48 billion and $1.67 billion. All dollar figures have been converted from the euro at current exchange rates. Other names earlier linked to the H&R sale included Degussa, Danisco and Cinven, a British investment fund.OUT OF BUSINESS: Beauty Gallery, the Milan-based producer and distributor of high-end fragrance and skin care, has closed shop."The company went into liquidation on June 14," said Gustavo D’Aquino, former Beauty Gallery sales director. Beauty Gallery, founded in January 2000, had been the manufacturer and distributor of such beauty brands as Sorgente Mezzatorre, Madina Spadafora and Pal Zileri. It was also the distributor of Roberto Verino and Armand Basi fragrances. Industry sources say it is likely that Beauty Gallery’s beauty licenses will be sold on a piecemeal basis. ON THE MOVE: Gus Bezas has been named senior vice president of sales and marketing for Milbar Laboratories, a maker of skin care formulations. He was previously director of sales and marketing for Faber-Castell Cosmetics.TEEN TREATMENT: The Belle Visage Day Spa has a back-to-school treat for high school girls — a facial designed just for teen skin. The 45-minute treatment is $50 or $105 with Microdermabrasion.BUYING SPREE: France’s Parfumeries Marionnaud has snapped up the 88-door Conrado Martin chain in Spain, bringing Marionnaud’s total door count to 1,084 worldwide. Marionnaud acquired the chain in two steps, first inking a preliminary agreement to purchase 43 doors and then completing the buyout by signing a "memorandum of agreement" to acquire the remaining 45 stores.Both deals are expected to be finalized in the third quarter.When the acquisitions are completed, Marionnaud will become Spain’s largest beauty retailer in terms of doors, with 120 stores located across 21 Spanish provinces. Domestic sales are expected to reach about $71.6 million. Dollar figures have been converted from the euro at current exchange rates.Marionnaud owns 541 doors in France, 115 in Italy, 87 in Austria, 75 in Spain, one in Tunisia, 108 in Eastern Europe and seven in Portugal.ANIMAL TESTING BAN: The European Parliament has called for an immediate ban on products currently under development that have been tested on animals and for which alternative testing procedures exist. The parliament also handed down a ruling whereby no cosmetics product tested on animals — whether or not alternative testing procedures exist — can come to market starting in 2004.PROMOTIONS AT JANE: Sarah Kugelman has been named vice president of marketing for Jane Cosmetics. Previously, she was vice president of new business and event marketing for the brand. Before joining Jane, Kugelman had been president and cofounder of gloss.com. Diane Teitelbaum has been named executive director, marketing. Teitelbaum’s previous post was as marketing director for Vincent Longo Cosmetics. Jerry Waller has been named vice president of category management and merchandising. Waller joins the brand from StaffMax Corporation, where he had served as president. In his new post, he will oversee the brand’s merchandising efforts as well as implementing and tailoring programs for specific retailers.MOLTON MOVES: London cosmetics firm Molton Brown Ltd. has acquired Pleasantville, N.Y.-based Mandave Inc., its U.S. distributor of nine years. The move was anticipated as Molton Brown takes steps to grow its U.S. business, which includes opening a freestanding store in New York. Lloyd Newman and David Maisel, former co-owners of Mandave, will remain part of the newly formed Molton Brown Inc. and will be joined on the board by Molton Brown group chairman Michael Warshaw and joint managing directors William Wellesley and Charles Denton. "We have enjoyed working with Lloyd [Newman] and David [Maisel]," Denton said in a statement, "and are looking forward to integrating the Mandave operation for the long-term benefit of our business." Newman stated: "We are proud of the growth we have achieved and look forward to working with the Molton Brown London team."TWO-IN-ONE: Neutrogena’s Clear Pore Cleanser Mask, which contains benzoyl peroxide, is set to hit stores this August. The cleanser-mask will retail for $6.49 at mass outlets and drugstores nationwide. Clear Pore Cleanser Mask, the company’s first cleanser and mask in one, kills bacteria that causes breakouts and doubles as a five-minute mask to penetrate the pores for deep cleansing and oil control. BECOMING A DUO: BeComing Transfirmed, a skin contouring treatment and BeComing Redefined Airbrush Foundation SPF 10, a color foundation, were created together to provide added benefits to skin. Both products contain a selection of the same as well as distinct separate ingredients that, when used together, deliver increased results. Redefined, is an oil-free, water-in-silicone foundation, that sculpts and contours the face using a 3-D complex. Spherical silica beads float within a silicone elastomer to create a soft feel and fill in wrinkles, creating the appearance of smooth skin. The foundation is available in 15 shades and retails for $19.50. Transfirm, is a satin gel treatment that contains hydrolyzed wheat protein, locus bean gum and hydrolyzed wheat gluten to support, tighten and firm skin. Transfirm retails for $35. Both products will be available in August at J.C. The Carpinteria, Calif.-based beauty brand, founded in 1999, began shipping to six specially selected retailers in recent weeks, including Beauty Bar in Jacksonville, Fla.; Cosmetics Café in Puerto Rico, and Palm Hotel Spa in Vegas — which has already reordered the Brown Sugar collection. About 267 stockkeeping units of Skinmarket’s 900 are being made available in the wholesale program. The plan is to have 50 to 75 wholesale boutique accounts in the first year, and two department stores. The company is in negotiations with "a couple of majors" now, and may deliver as soon as this summer.THE WINNER IS…: Groupe Clarins awarded its sixth Prix de la Femme la Plus Dynamisante (Prize for the Most Dynamic Woman) to Marine Jacquemin, a French TV news reporter. Jacquemin, plus other French personalities, including comedian Muriel Robin, was recognized for her work in Enfants Afghans (Afghan Children), a charity she founded that is raising money to build a hospital in Kabul for mothers and children."
