LOS ANGELES — Emanuel Ungaro and Robert Guerlain each paid visits to both coasts in the past week in separate promotional tours.
Ungaro signed bottles of his new men’s scent, Ombre de la Nuit, at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York and Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills, where the item is sold exclusively.
Sales during the appearances at Saks last Friday and at Neiman’s on Tuesday were not disclosed. However, Jean Hoehn Zimmerman, senior vice president of the Chanel division Fragrances Exclusive, Ungaro’s distributor, said a total of 4,000 3.4-oz. bottles are on sale in the two stores at $300 a pop. She said she expects the inventory to sell out “in a month or two,” which would mean a retail volume of $1.2 million between April and June.
“We need for the perfume, especially a European perfume, to have a careful distribution,” said Ungaro. “You will kill the perfume with too many doors.”
Guerlain, director of special projects for his family’s fragrance firm, stopped at I. Magnin in San Francisco Tuesday.
About 250 people jammed the Guerlain boutique on Magnin’s first floor to meet Guerlain, who had previously visited St. Louis, Miami and New York on his tour. Sources said more than $30,000 in Guerlain sales were tallied during his 90-minute visit, with about $20,000 coming from preorders.
Guerlain also presented a check for $15,000 — about 10 percent of sales during his tour — to the National Children’s Leukemia Foundation.
“The first three months are showing a very, very nice pickup,” he said, talking about the economy. “Some of the big store groups have now sort of settled more or less their financial liquidity and investment positions and it shows. They can now place orders, and we can ship.”
