In Hong Kong, the pedicure is getting a traditional Chinese twist at the Mandarin Oriental’s swanky new Barber Shop. The Shanghai Pedicure, which originated in the Twenties, is a slow, painstaking removal of knobby callouses, errant cuticles and rough nails with a special set of highly-sharpened straight edged razors. The Oriental’s pedicure masters Ben Cheung and Samuel So come from Shanghai, and together have more than 30 years experience in beautifying even the most tortured of soles. Says one client, “The knives look scary, but you feel absolutely nothing. It’s like handing your feet to a sushi chef.” The Shanghai Pedicure takes 90 minutes, and costs about $83; no surprise that with results like theirs, Cheung and So are often booked three weeks in advance.
