Former face of Maybelline New York and five-time Glamour cover girl Josie Maran dishes about her new eco-conscious cosmetics line.
What role did your modeling career play in the development of your new line? With 17 years of modeling experience, I’ve spent a lot of time in the makeup chair with top makeup artists. I never heard much about healthier alternatives that were functional enough to be used. I wanted the best of both worlds—products that performed well and were healthy for people to use. As the face of Maybelline, what did you learn about cosmetics that you implemented in your own line? With Maybelline, we shot so many different print and TV campaigns. Dark, sultry mascara ads then a shimmery, snow-bunny look for holiday. That was really a fun and creative process to be a part of. I learned different looks appeal to different people, so in my line, I decided to focus on natural beauty but still appeal to different personalities.
How does your line differ from other natural brands? I’ve noticed that natural lines don’t perform as well as high-end artistry lines. Ours does. Our biodegradable and recycled packaging also sets us apart. The line is about “luxury cosmetics with a conscience.”
What’s your daily routine? I love my Argan Oil for day and night. I use it on my hair, nails, body, everywhere. I use my tinted moisturizer because it contains SPF 30. When I’m heading out, I use a brown eyeliner pencil and black mascara. In my bag I keep my finger paints, lip gloss and lipstick.
What are some of the most important lifestyle decisions you make to live green? I live by the motto, “Reduce, reuse, recycle.” I’m always conscious of my ecological footprint. Also, I find spending time outdoors reminds me of why I want to preserve the earth.
