Nordstrom has designs on Clinique, thanks to Trina Turk.
The retailer has teamed up with designer Trina Turk and Clinique to do a designer makeup bag for the cosmetics company’s gift-with-purchase offerings. The initial partnership will last three seasons, said Laurie Black, executive vice president and general merchandise manager, Cosmetic Division, for Nordstrom. Turk will design a new bag each season.
“We have a long-standing, strong relationship with Clinique, and we’re always looking for ways to offer newness to our gwp customers,” said Black. “We looked at our gwp customer and our Nordstrom apparel customer, and asked ourselves which designer would motivate her to shop. Trina Turk [apparel] has been so strong in our stores, we thought she would be the perfect partner. And Clinique has been very willing to go forward with a project that’s new and different, which has been great.”
The project — the first for all parties involved — is the latest idea for energizing the gwp category, which historically has been a trial for the cosmetics industry. Gwp promotions can generate as much as 65 percent of some brands’ annual volume, but sales have been lackluster for the better part of a decade.
“The partnership has been a collaborative effort between Clinique, Nordstrom and Trina Turk,” noted Agnes Landau, senior vice president of global marketing for Clinique. “Clinique has always strived to bring fresh, new ideas to our consumers and this season we looked to fashion for inspiration. Partnering with two leaders in the fashion industry was the logical next step,” she said. “Trina Turk’s fresh and chic style matches Clinique’s — it was a natural match.”
“This is our first collaboration of this type,” said Turk. “We have a great relationship with Nordstrom, so were happy to further that through the Clinique gwp. Clinique and Trina Turk both have a clean and modern image, so it seemed like a good fit.”
The first fruit of the relationship will be a bag in a silver and white Tigress print, with a bright yellow lining. It will be on counter in all Nordstrom doors from Nov. 5 to 18 (or while supplies last; all parties involved declined comment on the quantity being produced), and will also be available on nordstrom.com. According to Turk, the spring 2009 bag will be a multicolor floral.
The gwp, available with purchases of $25 and up, includes the Trina Turk bag, Zero Gravity Repairwear Lift, Rinse-Off Foaming Cleanser, a color compact with Colour Surge Eye Shadow duo in Beach Plum and Soft-Pressed Powder Blusher in New Clover, Long Last Glosswear in Bamboo Pink, Lash Doubling Mascara in Black, Long Last Lipstick in Twilight Nude and a lipstick case with mirror.
The gwp will also be featured in a Nordstrom “lifestyle mailer,” created by Clinique and intended to resemble a magazine editorial page, said Black. “It’s not just featuring the gwp, it’s also giving our customers information about trends and styles,” said Black. “Trina talks about what her fashion focuses are, which is a fresh approach for us. In-store, we will have two of our best visual locations set up with photos from the mailer, as well as the product, and it will also be featured in our November holiday catalogue.”
