PARIS — After spending less than one year overseeing the art direction of Chanel’s makeup and watch businesses, Ezra Petronio has left the company.

“There was a differing of opinion in the way Chanel and he envisioned the role of developing the artistic image for makeup and for watches,” said a Chanel spokeswoman. “Chanel and he reached an agreement that their paths should separate.”

Petronio had no comment.

Chanel had tapped Petronio last fall. He reported to Maureen Chiquet, Chanel’s global chief executive officer.

In the meantime, Petronio continued working on Self Service Magazine (where he is editor in chief) and maintained his role as a director of Petronio Associates, a strategic and creative agency of which he is also one of the founders.

Petronio had formerly worked on beauty campaigns for Prada and Chloé, among others.

Chanel’s in-house artistic team is working on upcoming makeup and watch projects, the company spokeswoman said. She could not confirm whether a search is under way to replace Petronio.
