NEW YORK — Aris Industries posted first-quarter earnings of $1.4 million, or 12 cents a share, against a loss of $584,000 a year ago.

Sales for the quarter ended May 1 rose 3.6 percent, to $45.4 million from $43.8 million.

The company noted that higher sales combined with greater overall efficiencies at Aris’s operating subsidiaries led to the strong quarter.

Charles S. Ramat, chairman and chief executive officer, said that the results reflect profitability in the company’s core businesses.

Aris, which emerged from Chapter 11 on June 30, 1993, operates Perry Manufacturing Co., which makes private label women’s sportswear, and Europe Craft Imports Inc., which imports Members Only and private label men’s and boys’ outerwear and sportswear as well as Perry Ellis and Converse outerwear.
