NEW YORK — Charivari is closing its women’s store at 2315 Broadway at West 84th Street at the end of February, marking the end of an era for the 27-year-old specialty retailer.

“It’s very sad for us,” said Barbara Weiser, executive vice president and an owner of the family business with her mother, Selma, and brother, Jon. “This was our first store. We grew up here. But we feel that the Upper West Side really doesn’t need four Charivaris within 10 blocks of each other,” she said.

Charivari will keep its stores at 79th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, Columbus Avenue and 81st Street and Columbus Avenue and 72nd Street. It also has a store on West 57th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, and its newest unit, which opened on Madison Avenue at East 78th Street in September 1992.

Weiser said the Broadway store, the smallest in the chain, had sales totaling $1.2 million last year. The staff of 10 employees will be transferred to other Charivari stores in the neighborhood.

All the resources from the women’s store will also be relocated to the other three area stores, especially the one at Columbus Avenue and 81st Street, because it is large enough to handle the extra merchandise.
