In a trading statement for 2001 released here Thursday, Douglas reported 2001 beauty sales of $1.2 billion. (All dollar figures are converted from the euro at current exchange rates.) The German beauty giant now operates a total of 714 perfumeries, up from 699 in 2000.
On a same-store basis, sales for the year rose 4.4 percent.
In Germany, which houses 433 Douglas doors (447 in 2000), sales rose 3.2 percent, to $823 million. Douglas’s 281 nondomestic doors, up from 252 in 2000, generated sales of $414 million, a 14.7 percent gain. On a same-store basis, sales grew 6.6 percent.
Douglas said its perfumeries in Holland, Italy, Spain and Portugal had developed way above average.
The Douglas Group also includes Christ Jewelers, bookstores, fashion/sport retail operations and confiseries. According to preliminary figures, sales for the group rose 8.3 percent, to $2.2 billion in 2001. Final figures for 2001 will be released at Douglas’s annual financial press conference on April 25.
