NEW YORK — Federated Merchandising Group has named Thia Breen senior vice president of cosmetics, succeeding Rita Mangan, who has resigned after more than 22 years with Federated.

Breen recently left the Clinique division of Estée Lauder Cos. Inc., where she was vice president and general manager for North America and the U.K. She had been with Clinique for seven years.
At Federated Merchandising, a division of Federated Department Stores Inc., she will report to Janet Grove, vice chairman, effective April 29.
Reporting to Breen will be Colleen Maloney, merchandise manager; Sherri Marder, merchandise manager, and Olga Hladych, associate merchandiser.
Breen began her career in retail after graduating from the University of Minnesota. She then spent five years at Dayton’s, starting in the children’s department of the Minneapolis store and culminating in a job as cosmetics department manager in a new unit, Dayton’s Ridgedale.
She then moved to California and became an account executive for Clinique. It was at Lauder that her star rose and shone. Her career there spanned 24 years, including six years with Origins and eleven years with Aramis, in addition to the tenure with Clinique.
But retailing has always been in Breen’s nature. In an interview with WWD’s Beauty Biz in November 2001, she said her first job came when she was eight, working in her father’s drugstore in Benson, Minn.
“I was in charge of the 1- and 2-cent candy,” she said, “because they were the only rows that I could reach.”
